# Manage your device

Everything here lives under **My vploq** in the app. Renaming, updating,
releasing and reporting a device lost are owner-only actions and work on devices
you own. A vploq that is shared with you shows its details but tells you it is
not yours if you try to change it.

## Rename

Names are for you: "Living Room", "Office". Between 1 and 25 characters. Tap the
pencil on the name, type, and save; an empty or unchanged name is simply left as
it was.

## Firmware updates

The device checks in and reports its firmware version. The app shows one of:

| Status | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Up to date | Nothing to do |
| Update available | A newer version exists, shown as `current → available` |
| Awaiting first check-in | The device has not reported yet; normal right after setup |
| Firmware status unknown | The current version could not be looked up; see [troubleshooting](/support/troubleshooting) |

When an update is available, a **New Firmware Available** card appears. To
install it, press and hold for five seconds. The hold is deliberate: installing
firmware restarts the device, which briefly drops any connections through it, so
it should not be possible to start one by brushing the screen.

The update is then queued, and your device installs it on its next check-in
rather than on the spot. If one is already on its way, the app says so instead
of starting a second. An interrupted update is safe: the device keeps running
its current firmware and can try again.

If an update does fail, the app shows a notice with a **Retry** link, and where
it can tell why, it names the reason, such as a blocked network or a firewall.
Those reasons are listed under [troubleshooting](/support/troubleshooting#the-device-is-not-checking-in).

## Sending diagnostics

If support asks for logs, **Send diagnostics** shares them from the device. It
asks you to confirm first, and nothing is sent until you do.

- The logs are retained for up to 30 days, then deleted
- The action is rate limited; if you press it repeatedly the app tells you how
  many minutes to wait
- Nothing is sent unless you press it and confirm

On a phone, if a device seems unreachable over the network, **Scan device
status** reads its status by holding the phone against it. That is useful when
neither end has a working internet connection.

## Report a device lost or stolen

If a vploq is lost or stolen, you can block it so it cannot be brought online by
anyone else.

Active --> Lost: Report lost or stolen
Lost --> Active: I found it, reactivate
Lost --> Released: Release for resale
Active --> Released: Release this device
Released --> [*]: a new owner can set it up
`} />

**Report lost or stolen** blocks the device from activating anywhere and cuts
its access right away. A red banner then sits at the top of the device, saying
it is reported lost and cannot be activated until you restore it, and the device
stays in your list so you can undo it.

- **I found it — reactivate** clears the report and restores access. Only do
this if the device is back in your hands.
- **Release for resale instead** hands it over to a new owner and removes it
from your list. You cannot reactivate it here afterwards.

## Releasing a device

If you are giving a vploq away or selling it, release it first. Under
**Ownership**, choose **Release this device** and hold for five seconds to
confirm.

Releasing disowns the device on our servers and cuts its access immediately, but
it does not erase it remotely. The order matters:

1. **Release** it here first.
2. Then press the device's **physical reset button** to wipe it locally.

Doing it the other way round leaves the device stranded and unable to activate.
Once released, the device cannot be claimed by anyone until the next owner
activates it under their own account, so until then it works for nobody.
Releasing is reversible right up until someone else re-claims the device.
